About the work
Amilcar de Castro
Brazilian, 1920–2002

Amilcar de Castro established a towering reputation with his large-scale sculptures made from thick sheets of iron. Compared by critics to “steel cutouts of an imaginary alphabet” or “giant abstractions of paper airplanes,” de Castro’s works are simple in form and yet meant to create delicate plays of light and shadow. He designed his iron sculptures for outdoor installation to encourage interaction with the elements, delighting in the forms and patterns rust would make on their vast surfaces.
