Amy Cheng, ‘Bumble and Bumble’, 2014, Elisa Contemporary

Amy Cheng’s work is about the heart’s longing to be connected to the largeness of life and the timeless arc of the universe. In her fluid and evocative style, Amy merges Western painting with the Eastern sensibilities of her heritage. Born in Taiwan, raised in Brazil, and educated in the US, Amy has developed a painting vocabulary influenced by the interplay of divergent cultures – but with a fresh, contemporary view of our connectedness to the world.

She has exhibited her paintings both nationally and internationally and her work is held in a number of corporate and public collections. Her recent exhibits include Across the Divide an exhibit that traveled from the Fiskum Art Gallery (University of Wisconsin at Whitewater) to the FAB Gallery (University of Texas at Austin) and the Albright-Knox Gallery (at Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY) and I Am the Cosmos, curated by Sara Henry at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton, NJ. She has completed a number of public art commissions including a mosaic column at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, a painted ceramic mural at the Howard St. El Station in Chicago, IL, faceted glass windscreens at the Cleveland Street Subway Station in Brooklyn, NY, laminated glass windscreens at the 25th Avenue Subway Station in Brooklyn, NY, two ceramic tile murals at the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport MetroLink Station and a mosaic mural at the Jacksonville International Airport. She received a P.S. 122 Painting Center Fellowship in New York City for a ten month residency in 2011-12, and a Senior Lecture/Research Fulbright fellowship to Brazil in 2008.

She has been awarded two New York Foundation for the Arts Painting Fellowships, and an Arts International travel grant to China.
