Anders Petersen (b. 1944) is an award-winning Swedish documentary photographer who is best known for capturing images of people at the margins of society. He first garnered attention for his series of black and white photographs taken at Café Lehmitz, a seedy bar in Hamburg’s red-light district. In 1978, a decade’s worth of his photographs were first published for a wider audience in the photo-book Café Lehmitz, an intimate and candid perspective on the social microcosm of the late-night clientele.
This photograph from Anders Petersen’s Café Lehmitz series was used by singer-songwriter Tom Waits for the cover of his 1985 album, Rain Dogs. There is a label on the verso from Mira Bildarkiv in Stockholm. The author has signed, inscribed, and titled the photograph on its verso.
