About André Butzer

With a combination of abstraction and figuration inspired by art history, comics, politics, and animation, André Butzer's paintings are at one sinister and humorous. He balances large, vaguely recognizable biomorphic forms within chaotic, multicolored backgrounds and heavily textured monochromatic fields, establishing a style that he terms “science-fiction Expressionism.” His works, like Blue Smurf (2009), Entombment of Winnie the Pooh (2010), and Aladdin and the Magic Oil Lamp (2010), reveal Butzer's bow to the colors and subjects of animation and popular culture, but with an abstract and darkly humorous edge.
