About André Cadere

Conceptual artist André Cadere strove to remove art from the restrictive structure of museums and galleries. He is best known for his “Barres de bois rond” (round wooden bars) (1970-78) that he would carry on his shoulders to outdoor public spaces and exhibition openings in an effort to question art’s relative relationship to its physical and institutional environment. Visually un-intrusive—adorned only with a simple pattern of painted stripes in a limited color palette—the bars served as both sculptural and performance pieces, opening up the ways in which a person might interact with them.
