About Andrea Robbins & Max Becher

In their collaborative work, wife-and-husband photographers Andrea Robbins and Max Becher are interested in what they call the “transportation of place.” Their images capture such moments of displacement as an ersatz Venice in Las Vegas, Arizona’s version of the London Bridge, Cuban cigar brands made in exile, and Native American powwows in Germany. At first glance, the photographs appear like simple tourist snapshots, with their hyper-realistic color and detail; however, these images of what the artists call a “place out of place, with its various causes and consequences” explore the ways humans construct identity, and the way they impose it on others.
