About Andrew Hayes

Using steel and brass as support mechanisms, Andrew Hayes transforms book pages into curvaceous sculptural forms. “The book as an object is full of fact and story,” Hayes has said. “I take my sensory appreciation for the book as a material and employ the use of metal to create a new form, and hopefully a new story.” He acquires books from used bookstores and thrift shops, selecting them based on the textures and colors of the page edges, and then works them into new shapes. He preserves the resulting elliptical paper sculptures by binding them with thin sheets of molded metals, creating curvilinear forms out of otherwise rigid materials.
