About Andrew McConnell
Andrew McConnell got his start as a photojournalist documenting the closing stages of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Since 2004, he has shifted his focus to in-depth documentary work highlighting underreported issues in far-flung places around the globe. As opposed to the heroic and chaotic images often transmitted from war zones and crises, McConnell focuses on small moments and portraits, as in his series “The Last Colony”, which features portraits of the indigenous Sahrawi people of the Western Sahara. In the arresting nighttime images, figures are strongly lit—sometimes by a TV or bare bulb—against the night sky, creating the eerie drama of a film still. McConnell’s work has been featured in leading publications including National Geographic, The New York Times, and Vanity Fair.
