This painting also emphasizes the corporeal character of painting, but in another aspect – through the modelling of form on the surface of the canvas with the help of light and shadows. For this purpose the artist uses the sensuous parallel of washing: as if from water, rudiments of a portrait emerge from a viscid and fluid substance of paint.
