Andrius Zakarauskas, ‘Image of paint’, 2016, The Rooster Gallery

A layer of transparent acrylic creates a breach between the surface of the canvas and oil paint. The portrait made with oil as if becomes an autonomous object no longer dependent on the painting – a mask of paint, a kind of personification of paint. In this way the portrait is stripped of its primary function to represent a person, and only the depersonalized pure form remains.
