Andy and Dave, ‘Fictive Kin, Chair A’, 2017, Chamber

High back chairs always reach beyond what is ergonomically prudent. Like the irrationally expressive skyscrapers of a contemporary city, their height and personality gives definition to a space within a larger space. And the relationships between them can create an imaginary context for a person to temporarily inhabit.
This composition of chairs and a single dining table seeks to create a psuedo-urban domestic space. With engineered materials like foam and plastic laminate, the pieces embrace a technological naiveté that merges ubiquitous materials with an exuberant aesthetic fluidity similar to what thrives in the digital spaces of 3D modeling programs or virtual reality platforms.
