Moved by ideas of memory, time, and change, Ann Craven produces lushly colored, sensuous paintings, whose motifs of birds, flowers, the moon, and stripes are more than eye-pleasing images. Ranging from small- to large-scale, and presented individually, overlapping, or as unified installations, her works serve as a temporal record of her life and practice. Always building upon what came before, she continually re-visits her compositions, re-creating them in an attempt to copy them exactly, while understanding the impossibility of this pursuit. She embraces the inevitable differences between each canvas as evidence of our constantly shifting existence. Craven both confronts and celebrates these shifts, as in her series of paintings of the waxing and waning moon, which she describes as “a perfect subject…it’s [a] variable that’s constant but changing, so it’s perfect for my work.”
