Anna-Johanna Aengstroem, ‘Vintage Swedish Kilim ’, ca. 1950, Nazmiyal Collection

Vintage Swedish Kilim by Anna Joanna Angstrom, Country of Origin: Scandinavia, Circa Date: Mid-20th Century – Here is a lovely and impeccably designed vintage carpet – a Swedish kilim that was woven in Scandinavia during the middle years of the twentieth century. This handsome carpet was designed by celebrated Swedish rug designer Anna Joanna Angstrom, and features her signature aesthetic style. Generally speaking, mid-century rugs and carpets are celebrated for the unique way that they combine traditional design elements with modern aesthetic sensibilities. This comely carpet, with its deconstructed composition, is a beautiful example of this tendency. For while the carpet is superficially simple in its presentation, it is in fact much more complex piece. The simple striped borders, which feature a procession of small yellow geometric figures, which vaguely suggest floral detail. The field consists of a simple light and dark blue checkerboard pattern, unadorned with any further ornamentation. It is ringed simply with deconstructed floral elements. The overall effect is mesmerizing: simple and complex at the same time, this vintage carpet is truly an exceptional example.
