A keen observer, Anna Shteynshleyger takes technically exquisite photographs that capture the beauty and loneliness of the grand and the small. She has photographed the Siberian landscape, commuters at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, and the intimate topography of her own life and others’ in her “City of Destiny” series (2004-09). Seascape (2004-09), a photograph from this series, is a close-up of a mattress. Stuffing pokes out of tears in its blue fabric, like foam atop the waves that seem to run across its surface.

Untitled (tires), from the Siberia series, 2002
