Anonymous Master, ‘Iatmul Niyaura Mask 'wagan' ’, 15, Entwistle

This magnificent, extremely rare and expressive mask, wagan, from the Niyaura sub-group of the Iatmul peoples of Papua New Guinea, is a work of pure surrealistic energy as the artist has captured the great creator ancestor-culture hero of its highly secret cult worship and given it radically distorted humanoid features, expressly those of the eyes, nose and mouth.

Manufacturer: Iatmul peoples, Niyaura sub-Group, East Sepik Province, middle Sepik River region, Papua New Guinea
