Cuban-American artist Anthony Goicolea is known for his elaborately staged photographs, video works, and layered drawings on Mylar that examine issues of identity. His early color photographs were portraits of deviant prepubescent boys, followed by the “Shelter” series (2006) of digitally constructed fairy-tale landscapes containing masked and hooded figures. In his recent “Related” series (2009), Goicolea uses drawing, painting, photography, and installation to explore his family history and issues of assimilation and alienation. In Sea Wall (2008), for example, ghostlike graphite drawings of family members are contained in 24 glass bottles positioned on a glass cinder-block wall, meant to recall that of Havana’s harbor.
