Anthony White’s exploration of surface is akin to the archaeologist sifting through the remains of an undisturbed dig. Pieces of humanity are stumbled upon. This paint strata acts as a record of manic and spontaneous activity. The final patina of the image is slowly brought to fruition through building heavily impastoed layers of oil paint.

This small format is part of a series of works, which were exhibited in a group exhibition of contemporary Australian visual artists, “5 By 5”, organised by COMODAA (Contemporary Modern Australian Art) at the Menier Gallery in London in 2010. Other artists in the exhibition included Tony Lloyd, Dennis Nona, Helen Pynor and Laith McGregor.
