Sotomayor began his art studies in La Paz, Bolivia, under Belgian master Adolf Lambert and by 15 years of age was making a living as an artist. He settled in San Francisco in 1923 and then taught at Mills College in Oakland and California School of Fine Arts 1946 to 1950. He became internationally renowned for his art and was good friends with many other known artists; Lucien Labaudt, Otis Oldfield, and Diego Rivera, to name a few. He is in the permanent collections of many museums as well as private institutions such as IBM, etc. Shown in many one man exhibitions in Mexico, France, Spain, Italy, South America, and throughout the U.S. of A. He was known as the "artist laureate" of San Francisco. He was a member in good standing of San Francisco Art Association and the Bohemian Club.
