Bey's work presents a series of portraits of real women who were interviewed while on artist residency in Ghana, West Africa and from whom each fabric in the exhibit was purchased. The work also includes celebrity portraits such as Beyonce, Solange and The Venus of Willendorf -- comparing and contrasting ideas of feminism and social media Hashtag activism. For this exhibit, the artist's process was rule-based, with all materials that intersect with the Hitarget wax fabric being made in China. The needles, thread, fabric, needle threaders are all low-quality products made in China but that market to black women who are surviving poverty.
