About Armen Agop

Inspired by ancient Egyptian architectural techniques, Armen Agop utilizes black granite, basalt, and bronze covered in brown and black patina in his subtle, evocative sculptures. Agop, an Armenian raised in Cairo, also explores ideas of cross-cultural pollination in his work, which is frequently described as “contrasting art,” merging the contemporary and the ancient, and possessing an inner strength and sensuality. Typically beginning with a circle shape, he sands, manipulates, and smoothens their surfaces to form curvilinear, cone-like objects. He received the Prix de Rome in 2000.

Armenian-Egyptian, b. 1969, Cairo, Egypt, based in Pietrasanta, Italy
