About Arnold Odermatt
From 1948 to 1990, Arnold Odermatt worked as the official police photographer in the Swiss canton of Nidwalden, recording images of car crashes to augment written accident reports. Odermatt also shot separate images of these scenes to satisfy his aesthetic interests, and his son discovered these photographs after he retired. The photographs have received acclaim for their formal properties and documentary-like quality in charting the rise and perils of car culture in Switzerland during the mid- to late-20th century.
