Austin Thomas, ‘Dots Disorderly and Joyful’, 2016, CMA: Benefit Auction 2016

About Austin Thomas

Austin Thomas creates works that explore, alternatively, personal narratives and public actions: sketchbook diaries that explore the artist's everyday experiences and hybrid sculptural/architectural objects created to facilitate thought and discussion. In her daily journals, which she creates during conversations with friends, Thomas crafts detailed representations of energy and sound—these “pocket utopias” (also the name of the artist-run gallery she organized in Bushwick, Brooklyn) later become the basis for her larger works on paper, including collages and abstract assemblages. She also creates “perches”, site-specific sculptures that exist “somewhere between theoretical architecture, social psychology experiments, and an eccentric suburban backyard deck” that invite the viewer to play, climb, explore, or sit.
