Aya Haidar, ‘Past, Present, Future’, 2016, ATHR

ARTIST STATEMENT
PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE, 2016

The cover of this original 1972 National Geographic presents an interesting perspective, having been shot in the past, being presented in context of our present socio-political climate and opening up questions as to where our futures are headed.

The sheer irony of the ‘proud all American family’ clad in their life jackets, aboard a rubber dinghy, an image alternatively saturating global media channels today depicting plagues of migrants entering European shores, serves to playfully disarm and engage a much deeper discourse around migration, displacement and a global refugees crisis.
