About Beatriz Milhazes

Although she is based in the busy metropolis of Rio de Janeiro, Beatriz Milhazes draws inspiration from nature and its forms, which are central components in her work. Colorful floral imagery pervades her compositions, which often feature circular mandala-like patterns. “My work is about nature, the changes in nature, its colors—they’re all part of my motivation as an artist,” she says. “I need nature around me.” Other references in her work include 19th century embroidery and the vibrant patterns of contemporary Carnivale costumes. Milhazes, once the representative for Brazil at the Venice Biennale, practices an unusual method, in which she paints onto plastic sheets and then transfers the images to canvas after they dry. The resulting work is crisp and flat, and as brightly colored as the models on which it’s based.
