A devout Quaker, Ben Norris used his art to investigate the mysticism of nature in landscapes and studies that sometimes verge on the surreal. With his bold use of watercolor, he is closely associated with the Southern California Watercolor School, even though he spent most of his life and career working as a teacher in Hawaii. While there, he entered into a dialogue with the leading artists of the day, inviting many—including Josef Albers and Max Ernst, who would prove to be extremely influential on him—to visit the university where he taught. In addition to producing the watercolors for which he is best known, Norris was also an accomplished printmaker, collage artist, and painter of oils and acrylics.
