About Ben Sansbury

Mixed media artist Ben Sansbury is best known for his monochromatic sculptures inspired by the religious and totemic artifacts of ancient cultures, particularly those of Mexico and Latin America. He draws on the sculptural language of Minimalism, with its emphasis on material and the rejection of the art object as a medium for communicating personal expression. “There’s always been this idea that the aesthetic of older cultures is intricate or tribal but what I found of Mezcala structures was a completely different aesthetic—it’s really pared down, almost Modernist.” Sansbury’s extremely diverse oeuvre also includes conceptual photography and performance art.
