Bent Rej was a photographer at a Danish newspaper when he got the assignment that would change his life—and that would create some of the most recognizable pop-culture images of the 1960s. Joining the Rolling Stones on tour in 1965, at the moment the band reached the apex of their superstardom, Rej recorded the Stones both onstage and off, in quiet black-and-white as well as bold color photographs. In addition to his visual document of the tour, Rej holds another famous place in rock history—he’s credited with introducing the young Anita Pallenberg to the Stones when he snapped her photo with the band backstage. Since then, his work has expanded to include advertising campaigns and landscapes.
