Berndnaut Smilde's work consists on installations, sculptures and photos. Using the daily surroundings and spaces as motifs, Smilde is interested in the temporal nature of construction and deconstruction.

His work refers both to the physical state of building and to moments of revelation in which it portrays the hope or weakness of these constructive events to which it is drawn. Smilde analyzes the spaces and their appearance and selects them to investigate their unique details and features. His artistic point of view often reflects from duality, with questions about "inside and out", temporality, size, the function of architectural materials and elements.

He has exhibited throughout the Netherlands and also in Toronto, Taipei, Istanbul, Dublin, Paris, London and San Francisco. In 2013, he opened his first full-scale solo solo exhibition in the US at the Land of Tomorrow in Louisville, Kentucky, and was guest curator of a show at the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. His Nimbus series has been recognized by TIME Magazine as one of the "Top Ten Inventions of 2012".

He was a resident artist at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin in 2008. Smilde received her bachelor's degree in 2001 from the Minerva Academy and her master's degree in 2005 from the Frank Mohr Institute, both in the Netherlands.
