Conceptual and Pop artist Billy Apple has worked in sculpture, ready-mades, photography, film, silkscreen, painting, performance, online projects, and neon. He established the Billy Apple® trademark brand in London in 1962, changing his name from Barrie Bates, and claimed everyday objects (like apples) and life activities (like cleaning and vacuuming) as art. Apple continued his rise to prominence with the 1964 “American Supermarket” exhibition, collaborating with Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns, among others. He has been in alleged negotiations with Saatchi & Saatchi over a project to develop his own trademarked variety of apple, and in The Immortalisation of Billy Apple® (2011) the artist collaborated with scientist Craig Hilton to immortalize his biological tissue, ensuring that Billy Apple® will last forever.
