Bruce McGowan, ‘Skin Deep’, 2006-2018, MvVO ART

'Skin Deep' is a statement on a woman's desire to fit the patriarchal idea of aesthetic perfection. During the Baroque era, women took great pains to achieve alabaster complexions, powdering their skin and even using sometimes toxic chemical concoctions. This work portrays a bourgeoise who has abused her skin to translucence in attempts to achieve the appearance of healthful beauty and social standing.
