Painted in his studio after sketching en plein-air, a method that was famously done by Corot, Bretzke depicts an american, urban, winter landscape. Painted in his hometown of Minneapolis, we look down a snow covered street. A small white car sits in the center of the painting, headlights on, driving slowly through the snowstorm. Telephone poles stand tall and crooked along the side of the road, snow-capped wires extending back and forth across the street. The background is a textured array of whites, grey, and beyond the snow on the right, Minneapolis skyscrapers are barely visible. Their silhouettes are demure; assuaged behind a curtain of snowflakes.
