Carle Shi, ‘Cherries’, 2012, Galerie d'Orsay

Carle Shi is a figurative and still life painter who received her formal training at the prestigious Tianjin Art School in China. Her still lifes are incredibly realistic and she treats each objects as if she was painting a person; the artist considers them portraits with each object treated as an individual with all the emotions and personality that would accompany it. Her still lifes build upon the tradition of such masters as de Heem, Velazquez and Melendez.
