Carol Gove, ‘Vulnerable’, 2016, Galerie d'Orsay

Distinctive to the Carol Gove’s mixed media collage paintings are the personal items layered with her paint - architectural drawings from her father’s studio, hand-written family letters, aging train tickets, beloved sheet music as well as fabric and other found objects. “It’s exciting to me the immediacy collage can give you. You can be painting gesturally on a canvas, and deciding if you like the opacity of the paint or the drips or what your next choice will be, but when you find a piece of collage and adhere it to the painting, it changes it so much and immediately.” Her paintings follow in the line of the New York Abstract Expressionist school who sought to discover themselves in the cerebral and emotional depiction of color and hue.
