About Cathleen Naundorf

Following her photographic training in Munich, Cathleen Naundorf traveled to Siberia, Mongolia, the Gobi Desert, and the Amazon headwaters in Brazil to shoot native cultures; however, today she is better known for her fashion photography. In 1997, Naundorf began taking backstage photographs at Paris Fashion Week for Condé Nast, and since 2005 has worked on her “Haute Couture” series, for which she has been granted access to the archives of Dior, Chanel, Gaultier, Lacroix, Elie Saab, and Valentino. Using large-format cameras—such as a vintage Deardorff—or Polaroid film, Naundorf’s images are often opulent, containing exotic props, and sometimes fantastical. She prints onto her negatives and then hand-presseses them, giving the photographs a haunting effect. Naundorf was mentored by Horst P. Horst.
