About Chang Chieh 張杰

Chang Chieh’s watercolors merge a traditional Chinese painting style with the perspective and color of Western art. Chieh left China early in his career and studied art in New York, but he continues to incorporate calligraphic brushstrokes and classical Chinese imagery—such as lotus flowers and bamboo shoots—into his work. By including Western-influenced washes of color in his impressionistic depictions of nature, Chieh imbues a classical Chinese art form with a new energy and point of view.
