Though his paintings are abstract intersections of colors, shapes, and lines, Changha Hwang considers his works self-portraits: “Although my pieces are abstract, I see them as a self-portrait. I envision numerous possibilities with abstraction in connection to identity and self-portraiture.” In addition to himself, Hwang’s paintings reflect his interest in visual tension and a formal vocabulary influenced by architecture, traditional Jewish papercuts, Venetian lace, Islamic tiles, and stained glass windows. His painted canvases look as if they are woven together from individually patterned strips of material.
