Charbel Joseph H. Boutros blends Romanticism with conceptual art in a body of work that encourages reflection on space, time, and the past’s formation of the present. Often monochromatic and melancholic, his works across installation, sculpture, and video are haunted by the political history of his native Lebanon, as well as the anxieties latent in contemporary society. The series “Night Works” imagines the late hours through materials like marble, carbon, mirrors, and neon lights sprayed with black paint. For Night Cartography, the artist made drawings of his sleep duration on a horizontal timeline. In another work, Days Under Their Own Sun (2013), part of the oppositional series “Sun Works,” Boutros fades stencilled writing with UV rays and exposes calendar pages to the light of different continents during his travels.
