Charles Bartlett, ‘Hawaiian Fisherman’, ca. 1919, Egenolf Gallery Japanese Prints & Drawing

Stunning moment before the capture. Although the sea is placid, we share the feeling of anticipation and energy of the islander who is about to cast his net. The sky behind forms something of a halo around the fisherman, the clouds perfectly depicted. Bartlett wrote in his sketchbook “Eager and watchful, he awaits his prey.” This work is mint, never having been framed. Titled in the block with artist's initials. Scarce work.
