Charles Parrocel, ‘A drummer, seen from behind’, Christie's Old Masters

A study for a figure in Parrocel's famous L'Entrée aux Tuileries de l'ambassadeur Turc Mehemet Efendi, the painting exhibited at the Salon of 1727 (Versailles, Musée du Château, inv. MV 177).

Another version representing the same drummer with differences is at the Ashmolean Museum (J. Whiteley, Catalogue of the collection of Drawings, French School, Oxford, 2000, I, p. 262; II, pl. 802).

Similar inscriptions can be seen on several other drawings by Parrocel (for instance A Turkish rider in Catalogue Coypel, Galerie Paul Prouté, 1991, no. 25; and Head of a man seen from behind, in De Watteau à Ingres: dessins français du XVIIIe siècle du Rijkmuseum Amsterdam, exhib. cat., Paris, Fondation Custodia, 2003, no. 44).
