Soo Pieng’s undeniable craftsmanship is highlighted in Internal Impression I through his construction of multiple layers of concaved space, reminiscient of his mid-1960s landscape paintings. The intricate blending of presence and absence, addition and deduction, and height and depth shown in the work attests to Soo Pieng’s technical competence as not only as a painter, but also as a sculptor.
