Multimedia performance artist Chokra (whose acronymic name stands for Conscious Hoarding of Kinetic Rage Associated) harnesses music, rhymes, light, pyrotechnics, video, scents, vivid powders, traditional ceremonial practices and attire, and gender-bending posturing to present performances full of joy that challenge to the status quo. “I am motivated by following the path of joy,” they say. “I am interested in art that reflects the time we live in, considers consciousness in [its] entirety and situates the potentialities of the future in a rendition that is unapologetic and unafraid of the repercussions it creates.” Originally from the United Arab Emirates, where their performances were banned, they moved to New York to find freedom to pursue their work. The languages and traditions of Chokra’s home country infuse their lush, sensuous pieces, full of the power of unfettered generosity and creativity.
