Multimedia performance artist Chokra harnesses music, rhymes, light, pyrotechnics, video, scents, vivid powders, traditional ceremonial practices and attire, and gender-bending posturing to present performances full of joy that challenges the status quo. “I am motivated by following the path of joy,” the artist says. “I am interested in art that reflects the time we live in, considers consciousness in [its] entirety and situates the potentialities of the future in a rendition that is unapologetic and unafraid of the repercussions it creates.” Originally from the United Arab Emirates, the artist moved to New York to find freedom to pursue their work. The languages and traditions of Chokra’s home country infuse the artist's lush, sensuous pieces, full of the power of unfettered generosity and creativity.
