Chris Pfister explores themes of industrialization in gray-scale and sepia-toned paintings that recall early landscape photography. Building upon the legacies of such artists as Claude Lorrain and George Stubbs, Pfister explores and romanticizes changing landscapes and disappearing vistas. His paintings’ overarching moodiness aligns them with the work of such artists as Albert Pinkham Ryder and Ralph Blakelock. Pfister’s nocturnes are equally dream worlds, flashbacks, and allegories. They look into both the past and future, reminding us of previous art historical styles and questioning those to come.
