Heartbreaking in their candor, Chris Verene's photos are an exquisite view into the true personal stories and private lives of the photographer's extended family in economically depressed Galesburg, Illinois, over the past 35 years. Starting this work in high school Verene's photos depict the repercussions of economic and social upheaval. His pictures show the realities of divorce, loss of income, and mental imbalance. Verene’s family accepted his plan to follow their lives with his camera.
He is committed to making honest pictures of his family and friends--pictures that show true stories that anyone can understand.
Since 1997, Chris Verene’s trademarked performance art series ”The Self-Esteem Salon” has been helping people change their lives through self-esteem raising activities facilitated by a family of artists, many of whom appeared in the piece as teenagers, and who have returned to the project over time. He is the author of two major books, Chris Verene (Twin Palms, 2000) and Family (Twin Palms, 2010), and he was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography in 2021.
