“Radiant Space” Illuminates Houston with Flashes of the West Coast’s Light and Space Movement
Christian Eckart describes his practice as “working in a tradition of the icon,” following the lineage of his influences Konstantin Malevich, Piet Mondrian, and the Nouveau Realistes. Eckart holds degrees in sculpture and painting, the latter of which he studied under Robert Morris, and his current work borrows techniques from both disciplines. His works reference altarpieces and cruciform, as well as palettes associated with religious painting in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He combines this traditional sensibility with more contemporary materials, such as Plexiglas and Formica. In recent years, Eckart has experimented with other materials, such as painting on aluminum with hand-polished automobile lacquer.
