Christina Kubisch, ‘The Greenhouse’, 2017, Mazzoli

Eight networks of yellow-green electric cables hang like plants in a greenhouse. These cables are not just visual elements but also serve for listening. Each circuit contains a sonic environment that can only be heard through the help of a special cordless headphone. The spectator/listener who enters into this jungle of artificial lianas can create, with his movement, constantly changing combinations of sounds. The sonic material consists of a shifting selection of field recordings from the artist’s own archive: virgin forests, jungle, exotic birds… These “natural” soundscapes alternate from time to time with an atmosphere that is different, strange, and mysterious: natural sounds that are manipulated electronically.
