About the work
Christoph Ruckhäberle
German, b. 1972

A member of the New Leipzig School—a group of artists who studied at the Leipzig Art Academy in the 1990s—Christoph Ruckhäberle is known for his bold, figurative paintings of youthful bohemians, both unaccompanied and gathered at play, featured in various states of repose. Angular forms, strident colors, and assertive patterns characterize Ruckhäberle’s large-scale canvases, which draw on facets of socialist realism, German expressionism, cubism, pop, and folk art. His figures range from the realistic to outlandish; they sport purple faces, three-piece suits, tufted hairstyles, and mosaic masks that reference different facets of contemporary ritual.
