Ciler, ‘Untitled #19’, 2014, Julien's Auctions

Framed: 15 3/4 x 16 1/2 in.

The eerie disfigured work of Ciler provokes a sense of doom. By manipulating existing images the artist perverts the viewer’s suspected emotional response. The black and white aesthetic of Untitled #19 furthers this sense of an imminent death and combined with the religious robes of the altar boy invokes the dark side of religion. The blurring of the children’s faces with black acrylic implies that their identity is nonimportant. The title itself insinuates anonymity in the doom – rather than having a name the image is given a number almost as if the image is one of many that is subject to the same treatment of destruction.
