Claude Tousignant studied at the School of Art and Design at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from 1948-51.

Tousignant is a founding member of the Placticiens group in Montreal, whose practice is based on form, shape and pure colour, rejecting the painterly abstraction of Les Automatistes and avoiding spontaneity. Tousignant is esteemed an important contributor to Canadian Abstraction.

Claude has received numerous awards throughout his career, including a Prize of the Canadian Institute in Rome (1973), the First Prize: Perspective 67, Painting Section at the Art Gallery of Ontario (1967), and First Prize: Salon de la Jeaune Peinture, École des Beaux-Arts de Montreal (1962).
