About Clayton Brothers

Collaborators Christian and Rob Clayton find inspiration in their studio’s immediate environment, incorporating its color, neighborhood regulars, and fragments of conversation into their vibrantly colorful canvases. The recurring figures, motifs, and places create a thematic consistency, suggesting connections among individual canvases. Their paintings combine a variety of techniques and styles, including collage, figurative painting, and abstract gestures, and often feature patterns and biomorphic forms. The brothers rarely work on the canvases together or discuss paintings in progress. Instead, they alternate working on each painting separately, allowing their collaboration to intuitively unfold into finished works that are partly improvised.
