About Clem Crosby

Painter Clem Crosby is known for his works on Formica laminate, for which he prepares his own grounds, buying laminate in thin sheets and attaching them to aluminum supports using contact adhesive. “Formica lacks the weighty historical context of canvas,” he has said. “I enjoy the sense of detachment that laminate adds. This is maybe a counterpart to the organic quality of the oil paint.” His compositions, which also include oil drawings on balsa-core foam panel, often feature monochrome backgrounds and line- or grid-based patterns. He lists Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston, and David Salle among his influences.
